Description
This delicious banana walnut soda bread is a quick and easy alternative to traditional banana bread, topped with a creamy date butter for a unique twist.

- 2 very ripe bananas
- 2 cups flour
- 1/3 cup brown sugar (packed)
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt or buttermilk
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 1 cup chopped dates, pitted
- 1/4 cup hot water
- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 cup soft butter
Instructions
- Mash the bananas in a large bowl until mushy.
- Add the egg, brown sugar, yogurt, and cooled melted butter to the mashed bananas and mix well.
- In another bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt, then fold the dry ingredients into the banana mixture without overmixing.
- Gently fold in the walnuts.
- Pour the batter into a buttered loaf pan.
- Bake at 350°F for 40-45 minutes until golden brown on top.
- For the date butter, soak the dates in hot water for 10 minutes, mash them into a paste, and then mix with soft butter and salt.
- Slice the warm bread and serve with date butter on top.
Notes
This bread freezes well, making it a perfect emergency comfort food. For a gourmet touch, add extra walnuts on top or layer with Peach Tomato Jam.
