- 1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, thickly sliced
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Instructions
- Melt butter and brown sugar in a pan until gooey.
- Pour the mixture into a baking dish to form a caramel layer.
- Whisk eggs, cream, vanilla, and salt in a bowl.
- Soak thick bread slices in the egg mixture for 1-2 minutes.
- Place soaked bread over the caramel layer in the baking dish.
- Pour the remaining custard over the bread.
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.
- Bake in a preheated oven until puffy and golden.
Notes
For best results, use slightly stale bread and avoid oversoaking. Bake uncovered for crispy edges. Can be served with yogurt, berries, or a touch of maple syrup.
