Description

A straightforward and quick recipe for Irish soda bread, perfect for beginners and customizable with various ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk (or homemade substitute)
  • Optional: 1/2 cup raisins or currants
  • Optional: 1 egg
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the buttermilk (and any optional ingredients if using) and mix until combined.
  4. Gently shape the dough into a round loaf.
  5. Score a deep X on top of the loaf.
  6. Place the loaf on a baking sheet and bake for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

Don’t over-mix the dough to avoid tough bread. Scoring the top helps it bake evenly.
